Permit Processing Overview

The Permit Process shown above outlines the procedure to obtain a Building Permit for various projects. Permit applications may be submitted simultaneously to the Planning and Zoning, Public Works and Health Departments as applicable. When each Department approves their respective application, it is sent to the Building Department. After all applicable permits are received; the Building Department will notify the applicant to proceed with submitting a Building Permit application. Building Permits are reviewed and if/when approved, work permits will be issued for the projects.

Projects that require review include but are not limited to new home construction, building additions, interior remodeling, accessory structures, commercial space renovations, new signs, site work, and more. The amount of paper work, detail and review is based on the complexity of the project and the characteristics of the property where the project is located.

Processing for Permits, Applications, Service Requests routinely take approximately 10 to 15 working days.

Complex Problems/Permits/Incomplete Applications and during High Volume Service Periods processing requires 25 to 35 working days or more.

Permit forms and specific departmental requirements are available either online at or in the Bethel Municipal Center, 1 School Street, Bethel, CT 06801. These may include but are not limited to scaled building floor plan, elevations, and A-2 survey information.
