Open Burning Permits are Available Now

Open Burning Permits are issued at the Fire Marshal's Office throughout the year.

Each permit will be good for 30 days. The fee for each Open Burning Permit is $2.00.

Per the Connecticut D.E.E.P. permits for open burning cover only:

  • twigs
  • branches
  • garden materials
  • UP TO 3" IN DIAMETER

NOTE: Burning for land clearing or construction debris is not permitted. Leaves may not be burned. The D.E.E.P. Regulations concerning Open Burning will be provided on the burning permit. The Fire Marshal or a Deputy Fire Marshal will inspect all burn piles and feeder piles prior to an open burning permit being issued. The burn pile must be no larger than 3' wide by 3' high by 5' long. Burning in a barrel is permitted. Burning may only be conducted between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm on a sunny or partly sunny day with the wind speed between 5 and 15 miles per hour and the fire must be completely extinguished by 5 pm. A garden hose or barrel of water shall be on hand when burning.

Before burning begins
Before burning may begin, you must check the daily forest fire danger HERE or call 860-424-3929. The fire danger must be less than "High."  Also, you must notify the Bethel Police/Fire Communications Center of your burning by calling 203-778-7415 then press Option 0. Please DO NOT use 911 or call the Fire Marshal’s Office.
